Nutritional yeast (a.k.a nooch) is deactivated yeast flakes that are used in cooking. It’s not the same kind of yeast that is used in bread or pizza as it is deactivated and cannot ferment. Nutritional yeast is rich in nutrients and tastes cheesy so works well added to most meals.
What Does Nutritional Yeast Taste Like?
The flavour of nutritional yeast is savoury, nutty and cheesy. It is often used in vegan dishes for its cheesy profile and high nutritional value as it is high is zinc, B vitamins and protein. It actually contains all 9 essential amino acids making it a complete protein (although it is often used in such small amounts it shouldn’t be considered as a main source of protein).
Most of the nutritional yeast available in supermarkets have been fortified to add in other nutrients such as Vitamin B12 for even more goodness. Nutritional yeast is suitable for vegans and is also free from gluten, sugar and soy so it can be enjoyed by people with sensitivities.

It is also a good source of B1, B2, B6, Zinc and Potassium. Fortified nutritional yeast also contains B12 and B9.
How Should I Use Nutritional Yeast?
- Sprinkle it onto dishes (it works with pretty much everything… pasta, soup, salads, roasted vegetables… Think of it like a substitute for parmesan cheese)
- Make sauces and dips with it (one of my favourite uses of nutritional yeast is vegan mac’n’cheese)
- It’s often used in recipes to make vegan nut cheeses
There is no preparation needed when using nutritional yeast, just sprinkle the flakes onto the dish and you’re good to go.
Where Can I Buy Nutritional Yeast?
Most health food shops sell it (I also picked some up from Tesco recently) and you can buy it online. It’s best to go for a fortified nutritional yeast as this offers more healthy goodness including B12.
It’s usually more cost-effective to buy a larger tub but don’t worry, one of the great things about nutritional yeast is that when it is stored in a cool, dark place it has a very long shelf life.
